2019 Back to School Block Party
Our Back to School Block Party was a success! The party helped 187 students get supplies for the upcoming school year. Dennis and Ellen Mavrich were so kind in providing and preparing the delicious food. We want to send the biggest thank you to everyone who donated during the school supply drive, to the spaces that hosted the school supply bins (IGA, Oberlin Public Library, Ben Franklin’s, Hotel at Oberlin, Agrinomix, Kendal, and First Church in Oberlin), Oberlin City Schools, and to Brittany Lovett and all the volunteers who made this Block Party possible! It was a wonderful afternoon serving the community and honoring Jacqui Willis.
2019 Community Juneteenth Cookout
The second annual Juneteenth Kick-off Barbecue, held June 14, 2019, was a grand success. This is in thanks to the Bill Long Foundation, the African American Fund of the Community Foundation, the City of Oberlin, and many community partners and volunteers. This year, we served well over 330 people (we lost count after that), with so many coming back for seconds that we ran out of the 450 plates. Four veteran grillers shared their time and expertise, for a very small stipend, to cook delicious ribs, chicken and hotdogs; Mrs. Joyce Randleman once again prepared her signature green beans, macaroni and cheese, pasta salad and pound cake. The evening included music, a free raffle, face-painting and games for children, and, fortunately, perfect weather! Said one attendee: “I just wanted to say…Thank You. I brought friends from out of town, and they had a great time. The event was beautiful! The food was great, and I loved the way you brought everyone together. Especially in these times…” - it was a wonderful evening!
